hammerforging a cutting tool

The aim is for the learner to feel the satisfaction of making a tool from scratch, the old way. Due to the nature of the processes, this is suitable for individuals only.

  • introduction to hot metalwork and hammerforging processes
  • sharpening and polishing processes
  • handle making and fitting
  • sheathing/scabbarding
making charcoal for drawing

Charcoal is a highly cost effective way to engage in drawing and mark making, and variation in wood species leave a lot of room to experiment. In a world pulsating with colour and slickness, great peace can come with simple black and grey and the scratching, squeaking, tinkling sound of something that never feels cold to the touch. The huge variation in wood ensures varying effects on how it draws, and it is a wonderful way to use bits and offcuts, or garden prunings, or perhaps broken but sentimental wooden items to add to your story.

Charcoal is simple to make, and this workshop will ensure that you are in good supply, with the understanding of how to make more.

This workshop is suitable for anyone you would trust to make a little fire and not burn the place down, and anyone who has little people big enough to draw, but not quite old enough to disappear for a bit with a box of matches.

Experimental Printmaking (8 WEEK COURSE)

Printmaking is a rather messy, unpredictable and experimental undertaking.  The moments of ‘I have no idea how this will turn out’ are often followed by a ‘Wow, that is beautiful.’ Of course in time, with practice, the results can be more predictable, but always I think we want to maintain some element of uncertainty.  This is a much more honest reflection of our relationship with life, which is inherently uncertain. It is in the risk taken, that new possibilities of expression open up, where creativity has its home.

In this course we will be exploring many different ways of making prints, some using a printing press, but mostly by hand using a brayer or the back of a spoon. Printmaking is a way of creating a piece of art that is striking and elegant without needing years of practice.

Gelli-printing is a very easy way of creating stunning mono prints  which can then be displayed on their own, or used for further projects. Stencils, found objects such as leaves, leaf skeletons and fabric are used to create stunning impressions. The prints can be layered, and ghosted to create depth and interest. Really the limit to what you can do is your imagination.

We will also be printing using a hard surface, printing inks and brayers and drawing tools to create further mono-prints.  These processes are also easy and full of possibilities to explore in class and at home. We will be exploring both subtractive and additive methods.

Collograph are made by building a textured board from which prints can be taken. Further layers  can then be developed to create pictures.

If we have time we can do some woodblock carving using essdee soft cut blocks.  And for the more adventurous this may include some reductive printing so that the image can be developed and refined with several colours.

Adults, 2 hours.  8 weeks. $240 + materials cost

Painting – Finding your voice (8 WEEK COURSE)

This is a painting course suitable for beginners and more experienced artists who may feel stuck and looking for new inspiration and ideas.

It is an exploratory course, but each week there will be a focus using specific exercises to develop an understanding of colour, tone, line, form and texture. In this course you will develop confidence in your own mark making and decision making processes.  You will move towards authentic art making. You will be exploring the principles underlying art making, so you can trouble shoot and fix problematic areas. However most significantly you will start to  find your own voice and the joy this brings to painting. You are welcome to explore both abstract and representational ideas

This course is a journey about navigating chaos and structure, intuition and thinking, bold and gentle etc – complementary orientations as applicable to your own life as to your painting life.

In this course you will need to bring large sheets of paper and paints. You are welcome to use whatever medium you like, eg watercolour, acrylic, oil pastels, soft pastels, coloured pencils, ink etc. You may wish to experiment with several.

Adults  2 hours over eight weeks  $240

Develop your portfolio (4 WEEK COURSE)

Most students, teachers AND  artists could use a portfolio (digital or hard copy) of their work to give potential employers an idea of their work and personal BBC style.

Stuart Shepherd worked as a sculptural model maker in the NY toy industry and for the commercial film industry before returning to NZ to work for LOTR  and for  Massey University in Wellington. He has also curated  international exhibitions of work by NZ artists and developed curriculum for a number of schools in NZ.

In this hands-on workshop students will be introduced to techniques of making, and visual story- telling projects. The documentation of these will contribute to a portfolio.

If you have ever wondered what art school feels like , this short will give you a taste.

Four weeks , limited places.

Elisabeth Denis

I’m an interdisciplinary artist with a focus on relational aesthetics, conceptual and social (community orientated) arts who dedicates most of her time to literature (creative writing and reading), filmmaking and ceramics. The interdisciplinary aspect of my work comes to life when crossroads are created for mediums to meet.

Marten Ten Broek

I am an an artist and an educator, amongst other things. I have concurrent streams of work in a range of media, with thirty years of relentless practice. Recent work processes I am engaged in are painting, hammerforging steel and iron cutters, tools and knives, making and keeping bonsai, some ceramics, lots of drawing. In earlier iterations i have written, performed and recorded a few albums of music.

Dyana Wells

What I am noticing with my current experimenting is I am remembering my childhood, the feeling of cutting and glueing and shaping, and the concentrated delight and absorption in my tasks. The pleasure of competence and just being amongst the textures of my materials. Parts of me that had been forgotten are being reclaimed and re-membered.
